BRS Speakers Notes: Jim Whyte
Long standing Comrade Jim Whyte made available to us his notes used in a superb meeting on the Communist Party program. These provide a wealth of information and deserve wide readership in the movement. Britain's Road to Socialism Speakers Notes [PDF]. Winners and losers of the crisis - Britain's super-rich have done amazingly well
Prof John FosterBritain's super-rich have done amazingly well out of the crisis. According to the Sunday Times, the wealthiest 1,000 people have increased their assets in just one year by £77 billion. That's a gain of 30 per cent, bringing their total wealth up to £333 billion. This is an interesting figure. It's more than twice the size of the £156bn annual deficit which we are told has to be eliminated by all-round sacrifice and massive cuts in the welfare state. STAR INTERVIEW: YCL general secretary Waterhouse on CUB2010 and the challenges facing young people Protest against the Cuts Budget22 JUNE 2010Women, the unemployed, the ill and frail will be the biggest losers from the Con-Dems' slash-and-burn budget - and there will be no economic recovery. Cuts will drive Britain to ruin Two hundred marchers demonstrated in Princes Street, Edinburgh, on Wednesday evening against the budget. Speakers from Unite, EIS, PCS, CWU, the Green Party, and others addressed marchers carrying banners and flags from CND, Unison, NASUWT, EIS, UCU, PCS, Right to Work, Communist Party, Scottish Socialist Party, and others. As well as voicing opposition to the cuts at national level, the march heard of the opposition to Edinburgh Council's "Alternative Business Model" plans to sell off local services. Communist Party branch banner carried plus 4 flags. 200 Party budget leaflets given out to passers-by on Princes Street. It was very good to be able to say "Today's budget explained – today's response from the Communist Party!" when giving out the leaflets! It worked really well, the presentation of the leaflet on the website and its local printing and distribution. In Glasgow 150 Unison members gathered at lunch time in George Square to protest against the cuts and in early evening 200 gathered to protest against the attack by the ruling class on workers living standards. Banners from Unison, EIS, Clydebank TUC, along with other campaign groups present. The Communist Party had a colourfull stall with Party flags stuck in the flowerbeds. The stall did good business and tourists took photograghs of the comrades.
Britain's Communist Party Condemns Israeli Attacks on Aid ConvoysJune 2010'The Israeli state believes it has the right to kill anybody, anywhere under any circumstances', Kevin Halpin reported to the Communist Party's political committee on Thursday.
Britain's Communists called for national and international action to 'bring the rogue state of Israel under control'. This should include a trade embargo, withdrawal of the invitation to Israel to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and - following the lead given by South Africa, Ecuador and Nicaragua - recalling Britain's ambassador from Israel. Pointing out that no arms had been found on the Gaza convoy vessels, Mr Halpin also insisted that Turkish civilians had every right to try to repel unlawful boarders in international waters. He dismissed Israel's announcement of an inquiry into the convoy killings because it is 'like armed robbers offering to investigate their own bank raid'. According to the veteran Communist leader, 'Turkey alone has the right under international maritime law to conduct an inquiry into an attack on its flagged vessel', and should be supported by the United Nations to do so. The Communist Party urged full support for demonstrations of solidarity with the Palestinian people and reiterated its call for lifting the blockade on Gaza and ending the 'collective punishment' inflicted on them for electing a Hamas government in free and fair elections. Following discussion with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Party's political committee also announced that its own campaign to 'Free Marwan Barghouti' and all political prisoners in Israeli jails will be launched at the Communist University of Britain at the end of July. The following are articles from the Morning Star The Glasgow North West Communist Campaign - an Analysis
The Communist vote was not significantly lower than that of other Left parties with less demanding ideological platforms. The leader of the SSP Colin Fox got 319 votes (0.7 per cent of the poll against Marc’s 0.5 per cent) in Edinburgh SW. The TUSC votes in Glasgow North and North East were 287 and 187 respectively. Tommy Sheridan gained 931 votes in Glasgow SW where the SSP in 2005 had secured 1,666. COMMUNIST MANIFESTO 2010Communist Party to unveil its UK election manifesto
SCOTTISH COMMUNIST 2010 MANIFESTO
UK Manifesto launch @ BBC.
The manifesto highlights three key issues which the Communist Party believes are at stake in the election: the survival of the welfare state, the right to work and the right to organise freely in trade unions. The manifesto warns that all three are in danger. It calls for united resistance to the demands of big business that ordinary people pay for the crisis caused by the banks. From the days of Red Clydeside, through the UCS work-in and the campaign against the Poll Tax, Communists have always been and will continue to be fighting for the rights of workers like you and me. Over the next period we face a new battle against the so-called "savage cuts" in public spending which we are told must be made to pay for the banker's crisis. In North West Glasgow we see almost half young people under 24 without jobs, with youth services and community centres being cut, an acute shortage of affordable housing and the City Council preparing to privatise even more services. Whoever wins the election, we can expect a full frontal attack on working people and our communities. The Communist Party says we have to resist the phony agenda of cuts projected by the banks and big business. The Tories will never do this. The Labour Party will only be forced to do so if local communities and the trade union movement unite to say enough is enough: we will not pay for the banker’s crisis. As a young worker who has experienced all the difficulties of finding employment and housing, I see the need for organisation that can unite people for a progressive alternative, for peace, for full employment, for a sustainable future that protects our planet. A strong Communist vote will send a message to the bosses and their Tory and New Labour servants, that we reject their bankrupt system which gives million pound bonuses to bankers as a reward for wrecking the economy and forces working people to foot the bill, and it will show them that we are ready to fight back. Read more from Glasgow Anti-Cuts Meeting 2010 - United we standBliadhna Mhath UrThe British labour movement is heading for the rocks in 2010. The biggest rock on the horizon is the general election. If as still seems likely the Tories win in May or early June, then the ruling-class offensive against public services, trade union and employment rights and civil liberties will intensify. The poor and the elderly, single parents, the homeless and others who need the welfare state safety net will be hit by at least two massive waves of public spending cuts. The trouble is that this ruling-class offensive will continue even if new Labour is re-elected. Read more from Robert Griffiths, general secretary of the Communist Party of Britain. |
