Britain's communists have condemned the BBC for inviting the far-right BNP onto Question Time, stating that the corporation has no duty to give fascists a platform.

Speaking at the Communist Party of Britain's (CPB) political committee meeting, Anita Halpin said the election of fascist MEPs had not turned the BNP and its criminal leadership into a democratic, legitimate political party.

Ms Halpin argued that "there is nothing in the BBC Charter obliging it to assist racists and fascists to peddle their obnoxious and inflammatory lies."

She insisted: "The BBC has a statutory duty to promote good community relations, tolerance and public safety" and, wherever possible, the BNP should be denied a platform and the oxygen of publicity.

The TUC general council member also warned against "a new tide of historical revisionism" which seeks to blame the Soviet Union and the 1939 Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact for causing the second world war.

The CPB said that it intends to launch a range of materials at the Communist University on November 6-8 celebrating the role of the Soviet Union in defeating fascism.

Looking ahead to next week's TUC conference, Ms Halpin urged support for the People's Charter and for the CWU and other workers fighting to defend jobs, wages, pensions and public services.

The party also called for a big turnout for the Jobs, Education and Peace demonstration called by trade unions at the Labour Party conference in Brighton on September 27.

And it welcomed the release of the Grenada 17 revolutionary leaders imprisoned after internal divisions and US military intervention in 1983.
